In New Orleans, Mardi Gras marks the closing of the pre-Lenten season in the Catholic tradition. In French, Mardi Gras roughly translates to “Fat Tuesday” stemming from the usage of all fats and indulgences in a household before Lent in preparation for the abstinence and fasting to come. In modern times, Mardi Gras is a two week party in the streets of New Orleans for tourists and locals alike, as well as a celebration of the melting pot that is New Orleans history and culture. SOOTS celebrated Mardi Gras annually as a fundraiser in the past, affectionately calling it Fat Tuesday. In 2024, we brought this event back as a party in the 100 Hall of Raleigh Charter High School: with homemade gumbo and jambalaya, screenings of Les Blank’s award winning Always for Pleasure and Stay Prayed Up, a documentary about Mother Lena Mae Perry and Phil Cook, followed by a live performance by them. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors: Larry’s Coffee, Yellow Dog Bakery, Fairway Printing, and Videri Chocolate.
