Sustaining Roots Music (SOOTS) exists to foster an appreciation for traditional, Southern music and culture. We believe this appreciation will engage our fellow students in greater communities. We pursue the preservation of artistic wisdom to help create a more perfect world. –Sustaining Roots Music / Community Project of Raleigh Charter High School |

SOOTS learned on May 1st that we're in the running for a $5,000 grant from PepsiCo. In order to win the grant, we need your vote every day. Let's exercise social entrepreneurship for the world to see. This grant will allow SOOTS to fund more medical mini grants like that we raised for George Higgs last fall. It will also enable SOOTS to introduce more Piedmont Blues musicians to our students and the greater Triangle community. We plan to host a Bigger, Bolder Blues Revue next spring with Pepsi's funds. How about a show featuring the likes of Big Ron Hunter, Lightnin' Wells, George Higgs, Boo Hanks and John Dee Holeman to support the Music Maker Relief Foundation? We like the sound of it, too!
Simply sign in via Refresh Everything SOOTS to see SOOTS at work & join the fun. You'll find photos of SOOTS' events, our proposal in its entirety and a short documentary filmed to sustain our cause. We are proud of our work and your support.
SOOTS will also send our community a weekly email reminder along with a link to our weekly slideshow and live recording on page known as Song and Dance of the Week:
Please forward the message to friends and family. When you support SOOTS you support elderly Piedmont Blues musicians and their traditions. You can vote every day to help build a more perfect world in a small but significant way.
The Sustaining Roots Music Community Project (SOOTS) congratulates the Raleigh Charter and greater Triangle community for supporting Boo Hanks, George Higgs & John Dee Holeman at the LongView Center last month. SOOTS raised over $2900.00 to help these talented musicians and their cultural treasures through the Music Maker Relief Foundation.
SOOTS would also like to note that this event would not have been possible without our many sponsors who are listed on Sustainers.
Many hearts were warmed, but we still need your help. Come to the May Day Cake Bake ART FARM on May 21st @RCHS to support our student artists because you “can have your cake and eat it too” when you support SOOTS.
The 5th Annual Fat Tuesday Film and Music Festival was a great success thanks to the generosity of the greater RCHS community. The Mardi Gras event, sponsored by the Sustaining Roots Music Community Project, served homemade gumbos and desserts to over seventy-five guests before Tarboro bluesmen & Music Maker artists Lightnin’ Wells & George Higgs charmed the crowd with their traditional Southern blues.
Throughout the evening, a number of guests outside of the RCHS community commented on how impressed they were with the energy and professionalism of our student workers. The event was another reminder of what a special place RCHS is - a place that continually helps SOOTS raise money for the Music Maker Relief Foundation's elderly musicians.
A special "shout out" must also go to the technicians who recorded (Ferrell/Ramquist) and filmed (Steadman/Brown) the event. Keep an eye out for the SOOTS documentary and live CDs that are in the works.
SOOTS also hopes you'll consider our patronage packages as well as consider attending our 4th Annual Bluesfest featuring John Dee Holeman and Boo Hanks on Friday, April 23rd at the Historic LongView Center on Moore Square. Tickets are $10 and Doors Open @ 7pm. Contact Charles Montague for pre-sale ticket orders. Thanks for helping SOOTS help keep the blues alive.

SOOTS would also like to thank our many sponsors and patrons who have generously given to make this event and our community workday program a great success. Without such support our students would not be able to travel to blues luncheons, deliver medical mini grants to artists or invite George Higgs and John Dee Holeman to record stories in our classroom. We are fortunate to have such a foundation for strong community-building.

The tradition continues. In the merry month of May, SOOTS always invites the RCHS community to celebrate our good work together. What better way than to enjoy homemade cakes and ice cold milk - with a little blues in the background.
On Friday, May 21st on the RCHS patio, SOOTS will sell two slices of cake and almost all the milk you can drink for $5.00. Tickets will be sold only on the 21st. SOOTS will also have silk-screened t-shirts, SOOTS Series CDs and concert posters for sale. As always, all proceeds after cost will go to benefit elderly musicians via the Music Maker Relief Foundation.
